Since its outbreak, Coronavirus has
since become epidemic by spreading in most part of China. Globalization
facilitated its spread to other parts of the world, making it a pandemic
disease. All the continents have reported at least 1 case of Covid-19 albeit
Antarctica. southernmost continent and site of the South Pole, is a
virtually uninhabited, ice-covered landmass, and has a population of 1100 and
an area size of 14 million km² as per Wikipedia (2020).
Is Coronavirus a Death Sentence?
Most people have been misled, mostly
by irresponsible media, that Covid019 is a death sentence. The facts are, 85%
of the people who contract the virus will recover at home, without the need for
the specialized treatment. Nevertheless, some may need to be hospitalized in
order to recover. A significant number of infections, about 5% or less, will
result to mortality, which is unfortunate.
Covid-19 Death (Mortality) Rate
Statistics
By March 5, 2020, WHO Director-General
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that 3.2% of Cvid-19 cases around the
world have resulted to deaths.
In China, 2.3% of those confirmed or
suspected (based on symptoms and exposure) to have the virus died. The
following is the mortality rate demographic as reported by World Health
Organization as at 5th March, 2020. Patients above 80 years of age
had an alarmingly high fatality rate of 14.8%. Patients ages 70 to 79 years had
a fatality rate of 8%. In Italy, where the death toll from the virus stood at
52 as of March 4, the fatalities were all in people over age 60.

How Worried should we be?
How Worried should we be?
Illness due to COVID-19 infection is generally mild (not severe),
especially for children and young adults. However, it can cause serious
illness: about 1 in every 5 people who catch it need hospital care. It is
therefore quite normal for people to worry about how the COVID-19 outbreak will
affect them and their loved ones. Therefore, there is an absolute need
to maintain respiratory hygiene and observe other measures that have been put
in place to fight with the infection.

Coronaviruses
are strains of viruses which affect both human and animals. Corona virus are
Zoonotic, meaning, they can be passed from animals to humans. For example,
SARS-CoV was associated with civet cats and MERS-CoV is transmitted by
dromedary camels. Possible animal sources of COVID-19 have not yet been
confirmed
Consecutively,
there is overwhelming evidence that Cobid-19 was not from bat soup or wild
animal’s products. Rather, scientists have speculated that it was a lab
manufactured virus which found its way into the humans due to improper security
measures being enhanced to control the virus.
Should
You Wear a Mask?
It is not necessary to wear a Mask, and indeed, when you are not
infected, DO NOT WEAR A MEDICAL MASK. Only wear a mask if you are ill
with COVID-19 symptoms (especially coughing) or looking after someone who may
have COVID-19. Disposable face mask can only be used once. If you are not ill
or looking after someone who is ill then you are wasting a mask. There is a
world-wide shortage of masks, so WHO urges people to use masks wisely (WHO, 2019).
The most effective ways to protect yourself and others against
COVID-19 are too frequently clean your hands, cover your cough with the bend of
elbow or tissue and maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) from
people who are coughing or sneezing.
